    The Blank Page, my Friend

    White. Space.

My fingers rest on the tops of the keys, feeling a little clamy, wanting to lift from the keys and do something else.

    I continue to stare.

    My eyes wander.

I turn my head to look out the window.

The page calls me back and I know I must face it again.

    It will not remain empty.

There is work to do today.

The page is a wise friend. At times a harsh friend, at times generous. Always forgiving. Always teaching.

The blank page is my yoga teacher, reminding me that the mind always gives in before the body, that I can do this.

Breath. Write the next sentence. Practice. Find flow.

I am uncomfortable, and I am at peace.

    … .

I used to be a poet, once upon a time.

Somewhere along the line between 4th grade and present day, I thought I lost the ability. I lost the creativity.

But I just wrote a poem.  Or at least I came close, I think.

Do you ever feel like you lost your creativity in a certain area?

I have a suggestion for how you could get that creativity back.

    GET UNCOMFORTABLE.

Because one thing’s for sure if you’re an artist determined to live life true to your calling, there are LOTS of blank pages ahead.

Settle in. Start writing. Keep your fingers on the keyboard, gripping the pencil, the brush, whatever the tools of your craft may be. Keep a firm hold on them and do the work.

With every day you do you’ll begin to surprise yourself, and this is a wonderful feeling.

Then you’ll realize you’ve developed MacGuyver-like creative skills. And that shit is pretty cool.
